This weekend I put some music on and did a meander on a recently completed quilt called Interwoven by Lo & Behold:
All the perfectly straight and intersecting lines had me thinking I needed some curves and randomness. I’m just starting to become more comfortable with free motion quilting so it felt a little risky to attempt on my Interwoven masterpiece, but I’m so glad I did.
They say the meander is where everyone should start when doing free motion quilting and I think this is sound advice.
While working on the quilt, I was careful to try to keep the lines with even spacing—I guess “even-ish” is more appropriate a term. With open spaces I would try to reach out and come back to fill in.
The most important thing was leaving space to “exit” so I could keep continuous movement without crossing over any lines. I wasn’t going for perfect or masterful- just continuing to push myself to grow in a craft that gives me joy.
Below is a video of showing how I practiced sketching a meander then a showing quilting a meander on my longarm.
